Make Your Backyard More Interesting Than TV
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill (March, 1980)
Average review score:

They said it couldn't be doneMy MTV addict daughter has finally conceded that I have indeed succeeded in making my garden more interesting than tv - and it's all down to Beckith's superb guide. Stephanie was enthralled as I filled the garden with posters of consumer goods and junk food and skateboarded into a barrel of toxic effluent.

The Man Versus the State: With Six Essays on Government, Society, and Freedom
Published in Paperback by Liberty Fund, Inc. (June, 1982)
Average review score:

Lucid, Penetrating, and Dripping with WisdomThis book, deservedly, is a classic. Although relatively short, it is chock-full of insights -- many of which anticipate the important work decades later by F.A. Hayek. Spencer's passion for freedom, and his understanding of the nature of politicized and depoliticized societies, was deep. This is an inspiring work.

The Man Who Owned New York
Published in Paperback by Warner Books (May, 1984)
Average review score:

Best American Author About LawyersIt is difficult to understand why the three major works of Mr. Osborn are out of print, or for that matter, why there are not more books from this fine author. Mr. Osborn's work should be required reading for anyone even remotely thinking of going to law school.

"Many a Song and Many a Leccherous Lay": Tradition and Individuality in Chaucer's Lyric Poetry (Garl)
Published in Hardcover by Garland Pub (December, 1992)
Average review score:

This book opens up a whole new worldI read this book some time ago and still recall it for its refreshing and scholarly take on an area of Chaucer's work that is, I think, underrated. A compelling and informed writer, Ruud is able to present the value and beauty of Chaucer's lyric poetry in an accessible, but not patronizing, style. This is definitely one for your library if you can procure it.

Marfan
Published in Paperback by Bloodaxe Books Ltd (December, 2000)
Average review score:

Mad about MarfanI am qualified to comment on Marfan by Peter Reading because I live in Far West Texas and know most of the people and places Reading addresses in his poem. There is, simply, nothing so utterly surreal and yet completely real as life in the Big Bend. Reading's acerbic, outsider-as-insider observations of the contradictions of life there are wonderful. He juxtaposes visions of the baby Jesus on a tortilla with Border Patrol abuses, flaring sunsets with tumbleweeds, and hip, urban artists with donkey-riding transients. Reading, a poet from England, only lived in Marfa for a year, yet he manages to touch on the concerns of the people, especially the gradual encroachment of the outside world upon this somewhat forgotten and neglected area. This book-length poem is a compendium of observations, experiences, and musings. No doubt Reading had never experienced such a crazy place and it's unlikely Marfa will ever be the object of such a fun literary tribute again. Even though Reading thinks he's persona non grata in Texas, he's welcome back any time. We need the occasional reality check.

Maxfield Parrish: The Advertisements, the Art Prints, the Book Illustrations, the Magazine Covers
Published in Hardcover by Rizzoli International Publications (December, 1998)
Average review score:

A great gift ideaThis is a delightful collection of Maxfield Parrish's art, presented in 4 small, elegant volumes. Each book covers a different category of Parrish's work including ads, book & magazine covers, and fine art prints.
The most popular paintings are here as expected, along with many seldom seen pieces. There is also a very insightful text that chronicles Parrish's life, career and inspirations, and how the various paintings came about.
I especially enjoyed the book illustrations with mythological characters, genies & dragons, and fantastic landscapes. Another favorite is the advertisements, with 10 Edison Mazda lamp ads among many others.
These quality books with vibrant color illustrations on fine paper would make a great gift for any Parrish enthusiast.
